Catalog Settings v Preferences

Today’s Question

You’ve mentioned settings for Lightroom Classic being spread across both the Preferences and Catalog Settings dialogs. Why not consolidate all these options into a single dialog? Having two separate places for settings seems unnecessary when one would suffice.ws during import?

Mark’s Answer

The main difference between Catalog Settings and Preferences in Lightroom Classic is their scope. Catalog Settings apply specifically to the catalog currently in use, while Preferences affect the entire Lightroom Classic installation on your computer, influencing all catalogs you open on that system.

Most applications have a single Preferences dialog where you can customize various settings based on your needs. In Lightroom Classic, however, there are two separate dialogs: Preferences and Catalog Settings, each serving a distinct purpose.

While it might seem logical to combine these settings into one dialog, I appreciate the separation because they serve different scopes. Catalog Settings apply only to the currently active catalog, allowing you to customize settings for each catalog individually. On the other hand, Preferences apply to the entire Lightroom Classic installation, ensuring consistent settings across all catalogs on your computer.

For most users, I recommend managing all photos within a single catalog, making the Catalog Settings less significant. However, if you use multiple catalogs, the ability to tailor settings for each is valuable. The separation into two dialogs also reinforces the distinction between catalog-specific and global settings.
