Searching for Multiple Keywords

Today’s Question

In Lightroom Classic, is there a way to filter photos that contain both of two selected keywords, rather than showing images that have either one or the other? When I select two keywords in the Metadata tab of the Library Filter bar, it displays images with either keyword instead of only those that include both.

Mark’s Answer

Yes, you can refine your search to display only images that contain all selected keywords by using the “Contain All” option in the Text tab or by selecting multiple columns in the Metadata tab within the Library Filter Bar.

By default, when you filter images in Lightroom Classic using multiple keywords, the search operates as an “or” search rather than an “and” search. This means that selecting both “London” and “England” will display images containing either keyword, not necessarily both. For example, a photo tagged with “Great London” and “London” would appear in the results, even if “London” is not included as a keyword.

If you want to limit the results to images that contain both “London” and “England,” you need to perform an “and” search. There are two ways to achieve this:

  1. Using the Text Tab – In the Library Filter bar, go to the Text tab. Set the first dropdown menu to Keywords and the second dropdown to Contain All. Then, enter the desired keywords in the text field, separated by commas.
  2. Using the Metadata Tab – In the Library Filter bar, switch to the Metadata tab. Set the first column header to Keyword and select “London.” Then, add a second column, also set to Keyword, and select “England.” This ensures that only images containing both keywords appear in the results.

Keep in mind that the Library Filter bar only searches within the currently selected location, such as a folder or collection. To filter across your entire catalog, select All Photographs in the Catalog panel on the left side of the Library module.
