Avoid Importing to the Wrong Destination

Today’s Question

I occasionally import photos into the wrong destination in Lightroom Classic, such as the internal hard drive instead of my external drive. Is there a way to set up a list of preferred import locations to help prevent this mistake if I overlook the import settings?

Mark’s Answer

While there isn’t a way to block specific storage locations, you can create an Import preset in Lightroom Classic to quickly apply your preferred settings and ensure photos go to the correct destination.

Most of the settings in Lightroom Classic’s Import dialog are “sticky,” meaning they retain the values you used during your last import or the last time you clicked Done (instead of Cancel). However, some settings reset automatically, such as the Keywords field (which will be blank), the Start Number field for renaming photos (which resets to 1), and the Import Preset dropdown.

To streamline the process and preserve your most common settings, you can save an Import Preset. Start by configuring your preferred settings in the Import dialog, such as your desired storage location (selected from the Destination panel on the right).

Once you’ve set everything up, go to the Import Preset dropdown located at the bottom-center of the Import dialog. Choose Save Current Settings as New Preset, give your preset a meaningful name, and click Create.

When you open the Import dialog in the future, you can quickly select this saved preset from the Import Preset dropdown. While you’ll still need to check the Import settings, especially the preset selection, making this a habit ensures you start with consistent settings every time you import photos.
