Today’s Question
While organising images in the Library module of Lightroom Classic, a message about face recognition unexpectedly appeared, shortly after, the main screen displayed “No photos found.” I don’t want to use facial recognition. How can I disable it?
Mark’s Answer
To pause face detection in Lightroom Classic, click on the identity plate and select the pause button next to the Face Detection label. You’ll see a confirmation indicating that face detection is now paused.

While it’s possible to disable face detection in Lightroom Classic, doing so won’t stop you from manually accessing the People view. You can still switch to People View by clicking the corresponding button in the toolbar below the preview area or by pressing the “O” key. Additionally, disabling face detection won’t remove existing face regions or associated keywords for faces already identified in your photos.
If you pause the Face Detection feature, Lightroom Classic will stop identifying new faces in your photos. To remove an already-defined face region, right-click on the thumbnail of the person in the People view and select “Remove Face Region” from the pop-up menu.
The message “No Photos Found” typically means there aren’t any photos with detected faces. As long as Face Detection is paused, no new face regions will be created, and no photos will populate the People view. Pausing Face Detection can also improve Lightroom Classic’s performance since it won’t run background processes to analyze images for faces.
That said, Face Detection can be a valuable tool for streamlining your workflow if you need to organize photos of people. For example, if you want to identify family members in your images, enabling Face Detection and adding their names to detected faces can make searching and organizing much easier.
