Today’s Question
Does the “Create Saved Print” tab in the Print module perform the same function as exporting an image from Lightroom Classic and re-importing it into the catalog?
Mark’s Answer
No. A saved print in Lightroom Classic retains the print layout but does not generate a new file with applied adjustments. Instead, it saves the project as a collection that references the original images used in the layout.

Today’s question builds on the one asked in a recent Lightroom Community support session. The photographer wanted to create a separate derivative image with locked-in adjustments for printing. I suggested exporting a copy of the original image and checking the “Add to This Catalog” option in the Export dialog to bring the exported file back into Lightroom Classic.
A saved print in the Print module, however, works differently. It preserves the print layout by creating a collection that references the source image(s) rather than generating a new file with adjustments applied. Any edits made to the original image will be reflected in the saved print when revisited.
For example, if you save a print layout containing a colour image and later convert the original to black and white, the saved print will update to display the black and white version instead of the original colour version.
In essence, a saved print is designed to maintain a specific print layout, not to create a standalone, adjusted version of an image.
