Exporting Metadata

Today’s Question

When exporting photos from Lightroom Classic with the “All Metadata” option, I still don’t see the location metadata when viewing the exported images. Does “All Metadata” not actually include everything in this case?

Mark’s Answer

The “All Metadata” option in Lightroom Classic should include all metadata when exporting (unless there’s an unknown bug). However, to ensure everything is preserved, make sure the “Remove Person Info” and “Remove Location Info” checkboxes are unchecked.

When exporting photos from Lightroom Classic, you have several options for controlling which metadata is included in the exported copies. Understanding how these options interact is key to ensuring the correct metadata is retained.

The “All Metadata” option in the Export dialog generally includes all metadata in the exported images, but there are exceptions.

First, if the “Remove Person Info” checkbox is enabled, metadata related to people in the photo—such as the “Person Shown” field in IPTC metadata and any keywords marked as “Person”—will be excluded.

Similarly, enabling the “Remove Location Info” checkbox will exclude location-related metadata, such as GPS coordinates, even if “All Metadata” is selected.

Additionally, Lightroom provides keyword-specific export controls. In the Keyword List panel of the Library module, right-clicking a keyword and selecting “Edit Keyword Tag” reveals options for export behavior. If the “Include on Export” checkbox is unchecked for a keyword, it will not be included in exported images, regardless of the “All Metadata” selection.

Ultimately, while “All Metadata” ensures most metadata is included, other settings—such as the removal of person or location data and keyword export preferences—can override this and limit what is actually embedded in the exported files.
